SCANVOX

INSTALLATION  •  MANUAL

ScanVox allows you to read printed documents, by scanning them and browsing their content thanks to a speech synthesis.
At any time, it is possible to navigate through the text, pause and then resume reading.

INSTALLATION

ScanVox comes in 3 versions :
• ScanVox, application available on the Microsoft Windows Store.
This version requires a Windows 10 computer, with speakers or headphones, and a WIA compatible scanner. All updates are automatically installed.
• ScanVox +, application downloadable from our website.
This version will not change any more because it is intended for older devices. It requires a computer running Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10, with speakers or headphones, and a TWAIN or WIA compatible scanner, which is the case with most scanners.
During installation, if you get a message from Microsoft Defender, click on 'More information' and then on the 'Run anyway' button.
• ScanVox PI, running on Raspberry PI, and allowing people without a computer to have a reading machine for 9590 (excluding scanner and USB speakers or headphones, so you can choose the model) :  see PIVOX.

MANUAL

When the application starts, ScanVox welcomes you.
You can then simply interact with the application, thanks to the 4 arrow keys on your keyboard.
The Up and Down arrows allow to select a software functionality, the Left and Right arrows to choose one of the options of the selected functionality.
If no action on your part is detected within 3 seconds after selecting a feature with the Up and Down arrows, the application informs you of the options available for this feature.
You will find a summary of the commands offered by ScanVox in the table below :

Notes :
• You can scan several pages in a row. The software notifies you as soon as it has finished scanning and analyzing a page so that you can reposition your document on the scanner, to start scanning a new page.
• At any time, you can cancel a scan in progress by pressing the Left arrow.
• You can place a document on the scanner by reversing it: ScanVox will automatically reposition it in the right direction.
• ScanVox automatically detects your scanner, meaning that if you have several scanners, connect only the one you want to use.
• If ScanVox does not detect any compatible scanner, while your scanner works correctly with other applications, it is certainly that you are using the generic driver of Windows 10, which is therefore not optimized for your scanner. Download the driver for your device from the manufacturer's website and install it on your PC.
• If you are not yet equipped with a scanner, no need to choose a high-end product...  Multifunction scanners (printers-scanners, starting from € 30) are perfectly suitable and are often cheaper than simple scanners (from € 60), because these are the best-selling products !

WEBVOX

INSTALLATION  •  MANUAL

WebVox is a web reader that allows to browse the Internet without any difficulty.
WebVox is fully controlled with the Control, Escape and 4 arrow keys on the keyboard, preventing the user from learning many shortcuts.

INSTALLATION

WebVox exists in 2 versions :
• WebVox PC, running on Windows, Mac and Linux, as an extension to the Google Chrome browser, as it relies on the ChromeVox accessibility engine.
If necessary, install the Google Chrome browser on your computer, by going to www.google.com/chrome/.
With it, go to the Google WebStore then install WebVox by clicking on the Add to Chrome button.
When a new version of WebVox is available, the update is done automatically via the Internet, without your intervention.
Note that when you open a new tab for the first time after installing WebVox, your browser will tell you that This page has been modified by the WebVox extension. Simply click on the Keep button then relaunch Google Chrome.
If subsequently, you wish to uninstall WebVox, select in the menu of the Google Chrome browser the option More tools - Extensions, then the Remove button corresponding to the extension.
• WebVox PI, running on Raspberry PI, to allow blind people to benefit from a computer comparable to a ChromeBook for less than € 100 :  see PIVOX.

MANUAL

To browse the Internet with WebVox, first press the left and right arrows to set a review level, corresponding to the type of item you want to browse. Then use the up and down arrows to move from one item to another, depending on the selected review level.
When you long press the up and down arrows (until the beep), you go to the first and last item respectively. As WebVox has 11 review levels, so when you long press the left and right arrows you select the extreme review levels.
WebVox also has a command menu, accessible by pressing the Control key. This menu allows you to launch commands, such as searching for information, entering an address, etc.
To move through the menu, use the up and down arrows, and to select an item, use the right arrow. Do the same if the item has a sub-menu, then use the up and down arrows again to browse it. The left arrow returns to the upper menu.
At any time, you can exit the command menu by pressing the Control key again.
You now know the principle of WebVox, it's up to you to discover all of its features...
Notes :
• when you issue a command, you automatically exit the command menu. However, in some cases, such as voice related configuration options, it is necessary to press the Control key again to exit the command menu.
• people having difficulty entering a text from the keyboard, will find in the command menu a virtual keyboard which allows the entry of characters with the Control, Escape and 4 arrow keys.

PIVOX

INSTALLATION  •  MANUAL

For some time now, we have wanted to present blind people a computer without a screen or any component that is unnecessary for them but often expensive.
We found the perfect product in November 2020, with the release of the Raspberry PI 400.

INSTALLATION

The computer is integrated into a compact keyboard, which you only need to connect to the electrical network, or to a battery to be able to take it everywhere...

Its price :  9590
(excluding USB speakers or headphones, so you can choose the model)

This price includes :
• the Raspberry PI 400 (7450), computer integrated with a compact 78-key keyboard, with quad-core ARM 64-bit 1.8 GHz processor, 4 GB of LPDDR4-3200 RAM, wifi, bluetooth, dimensions 286 x 122 x 23 mm, 385 g  (on sale at PiAustralia, CanaKit, Pimoroni, PiHut, SB Components UK, PiShop US, Adafruit US).
When the keyboard is in front of you, you will find behind it, from right to left, 1 40-pin GPIO port (1), 1 microSD card slot (2), 2 microHDMI ports (3) (for connecting a display), 1 USB-C port for power adapter (4), 2 USB 3.0 ports (5), 1 USB 2.0 port (6), 1 ethernet port (7), 1 notch for adding a Kensington anti-theft system (8).

• the power adapter (895), 5V/3A USB-C 15,3 W  (on sale at PiAustralia, CanaKit Canada, Pimoroni, PiHut, SB Components UK, PiShop US, Adafruit US).

• the operating system with ScanVox or WebVox (1245), on SanDisk 16 GB microSD card, class 10, read up to 98 MB/s  (on sale at our website).

To avoid unnecessary costs, we invite you to order the Raspberry Pi 400 and its power adapter directly from the official distributors website (see links above). Arm yourself with patience because already a victim of its success ... and of the pandemic, the product is out of stock in France until at least the end of March 2021 !
Indeed, its manufacturer, Sony, has been strongly impacted by the health crisis and cannot ensure sufficient production to meet demand.
For the microSD card containing the operating system with ScanVox or WebVox, you can pre-order it on our site, by completing the following form :

so that you can finalize your order

For ScanVox, we used the Windows 10 IOT operating system, a light version of Windows 10 allowing the launch of a single application, but having the advantage of being free and having a powerful character recognition system.
For WebVox, we opted for a system comparable to that of ChromeBooks because for us, the web is the future of computing : some like Google have understood it for several years already with ChromeOS, others like Microsoft are starting to resolve it, with Office 365 (the Office suite accessible on the web) or the next version of Windows (Windows X, strangely similar to ChromeOS).
In terms of accessibility, this allowed us to design a simplified system, equivalent to WebVox PC and therefore controlled only with a few very easily identifiable keys.
If you are not yet ready to take the leap of a web-only system, WebVox PC, whose functionality is currently identical, may help you to do this.
On the installation side, when you have received your Raspberry PI 400, insert our microSD card in the slot provided for this purpose. Connect your speakers and, for ScanVox, your scanner to the USB ports behind the keyboard. Connect the adapter to the Raspberry then to the electrical network or possibly to a battery.
If you want to buy a battery, also called a power-bank, to take your little computer everywhere, remember to check that it has a USB-C 5V/3A output. For information, the maximum consumption of the Raspberry PI 400 is 885 mAh. Thus a 10,000 mAh battery will allow the Raspberry to be used for about 10 hours. On the other hand, prefer a battery with a minimum of outputs so that your device has all the capacity of it.

MANUAL

Start the computer by pressing the F10 key (fourth key to the left from the right end of the top of the keyboard).
After starting the system, ScanVox (or WebVox) will notify you as soon as it is operational.
Very important :  never unplug your Raspberry before turning it off by pressing the F10 key again. Otherwise, you may damage the microSD card.
